It is always the same- it never varies. When you are lost and need direction to bring you back on course- you look toward true north to re-set your orientation. You can count on it- you can trust it.

So what is your personal “true north”? Where do you turn when you need direction or need to re-orient yourself? What are the undeniable truths that guide you in your personal journey? It is likely different for everyone, as we are all wired in our own way, with diverse backgrounds, values, and goals. We all have different lenses we look through to help guide the way and navigate to our various destinations.

In his book Half Time- author Bob Buford challenges the reader to understand and be able to define the “one thing in your box”- or the one thing that is at the center of your life, that you use to drive decisions. This “one thing” is essentially what I call true north- that centering point for all of your actions and decisions.

As experience has taught over time, it is hard to have two things in your box- as they may conflict with each other and confuse your decisions. So, the discipline in defining your true north is to be able to find that one thing- much like true north on a compass- that doesn’t change, and you can always count on to guide your way.

But this is not always easy, as we are a generation of “multi-taskers” who have been conditioned to always have multiple priorities and focal points at any given time. While it may be appropriate to have multiple priorities; it is likely not realistic to have multiple true north lenses you look through to help make the tough decisions and trade-offs. As has been said repeatedly over history- including the Bible (Matthew 6:24)- “No one can serve two masters. Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other.”

It is indeed tough to serve multiple masters- as something will have to give at some point and chances are neither master will be happy. Wouldn’t you rather have it be your own true north that is the defining factor in your life’s journey; versus overlaying someone else’s view of you and your circumstances upon you? I certainly would.

For me, my true north is my faith in God- with Christ in the center. It’s the one thing that has driven my actions and steps over my entire adult life. There certainly have been times in my personal and professional journey where I’ve had to turn to my true north to guide me back to the right path- often having wandered away from those things that were most important to me- many times unintentionally. While still stumbling on a regular basis, it is the one thing that brings me back to center and leads the way for my ongoing journey.

The past is gone, yet we are here

It’s time to live, with joy, not fear

Whether mountain, stream, farm or coast

Each day’s a gift, let’s raise a toast

We’re born with kindness in our heart

Each day we choose to play our part

Our purpose drives each step that we take

Our passion burns, our luck we make

The time is now for us to live

Love and peace are ours to give

We can’t be sure how our days end

With dreams so rich we must defend

No time to waste, each moment’s pure

We’re called to serve, that much is sure

Stand tall, be proud- don’t chase the fame

The pride you feel is in your name

While fortunes fall and egos tumble

We lose our way, fall and stumble

Our heart will always point true north

It’s rarely wrong so bring it forth

With peace I sit right here and now

No worries about the when or how

God will lead me home one day

His Light and Love will lead the way

I’m grateful for this life of mine

Always remember, all is fine
